IS THERE A CONTRACT IN PLACE?

How are you handling your business?  Are you crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s?  Working in your business every day should be the catalyst that can help you to become business ready for several types of occurrences that will occur.

Listen to this.  When doing business with a customer do you have a contract in place?  One day when doing business with a company there was a part of the contract that the company did not wish to abide by.

The customer wanted the deliverables in a format different than agreed upon in the signed contract.  Instead of becoming emotional about the change, as a lot of us business owners do, the focus was put more on the part of the signed contract that addressed ‘deliverables.’  If a signed contract addressing ‘deliverables’ was not in place then there would not be a leg to stand on.

The signed contract saved the day.  Is there a contract in place with your customers?  If not, think about it, it can be beneficial for you.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Whole Foods, Tesla, Sprouts, GEICO, Kroger, Macy’s, Nordstrom and Uber are all brand names.  Each name represents something different outside of their business industry.  Their businesses can be identified within the food, transportation, insurance or apparel industries but their names represent so much more.

Nordstrom is known for their personalized and focused customer services.  Tesla is the electric car that is taking the world by storm from the Roadster to the Model X.  When you see the green gecko on the commercial immediately GEICO comes to mind.

What’s in a name is important to what you are selling and the message that you are conveying to the customers about your goods and services.  Your name is your brand just like the image or symbol that you use to speak for your company.  Whether you are selling sweet potato pies like Patti LaBelle or a variety of cookies like the Girl Scouts your name is important and it says a lot about you, who you are and what you represent.  What is your name saying?

HANDLE YOUR BUSINESS

Did you know that other businesses including your potential customers are watching you?  The watch is not only from a position of competition but to determine how you handle your business?  As these businesses are watching either from near or far, what will they see?

A Fortune 500 company was interested in working with me so they watched me for a few months.  They contacted me after the sixth month to state that they were interested in purchasing one of my services.    After the services were rendered they paid me and requested a paid invoice statement for their records.

Did this cause me a hiccup in my business?  Was I prepared to provide to this customer what they needed for their records?   I was ready and met the need of the customer within less than 24 hours.

What happened next was a great learning experience for me.  When I emailed the paid invoice statement and called the customer to inform them to check their inbox they answered with a WOW that was quick!  This response created a dialogue between us.

I asked the customer why they made this statement and they were brutely honest which I truly respected.  They stated that they were so impressed as to how a small business is able to provide a deliverable so quickly, readily and professionally including the required accounting information.  It was further stated that small businesses make promises that a lot of times they can’t keep.

They continued with on some occasions small businesses can provide a deliverable of their products or services but hit a brick wall when asked for an accounting deliverable (i.e. invoice).  Yes, something as simple as not providing an invoice within a timely fashion can be an issue in working with your ideal customers.  This simple task speaks volume about your business.

Did you know that this allows them to gauge your professionalism or the lack thereof?  We never know how companies that we are either partnered with or wish to partner with view us.  At the end of the day we realize that business owners wear many hats but always do your best to handle your business.

How Are You Making A Difference?

exit-sign-2

As I was talking to a colleague we talked about wealth, success and leaving a legacy.  Business owners are the catalyst for stimulating the economy but if you are a business owner what have you done to make a difference. Search yourself and gauge what extraordinary things that you are doing to make the world a better place.

Yes, we all want to make money especially as a business owner but ask yourself what legacy you would leave to your children, your grandchildren and this world. You will not be remembered by how much money you made but by what you did.  As you are searching yourself begin to think about the paths that you have tread, marks that you have made and the blessings that you have been given.

As the year is coming to an end stop, reflect and see what you have done in your life.  Ask yourself who have you blessed? You only have one life, live it well.  I wish you peace, happiness and blessings for 2016.

Using your mess for your message

Aesthetically SatisfyingThis country was founded on the premise of the importance of having God at the forefront of the founding fathers’ decisions; now that’s changed.  Gun selling is at an all time high where anyone can practically get one.  Killing is on the rampage.  Children are carrying guns to school and young adults at the colleges and universities.  Is there a message in all of this mess?  I say that there is.

My question to you is that with all of the mess going on in your life what message do you have for your customers?  What message are you translating to your customers?  If you were to ask your customers what would they say about your business?  Are you reliable?  Trustworthy?  Dependable? Or are you always lacking by not being within scope, within budget nor delivering your goods or services on time?  Believe it or not your personal life including your character becomes transparent and intermingled with your business and vice versa.  Depending upon how you handle the mess in your life will help to determine how effectively you are in delivering the message in your business.

Being a business owner takes a lot of guts, patience, hope, passion and it also takes a lot of failure and losses.  People may think that when you make some decisions that you are totally out of your mind.  But in the mess you were able to glean some things that you know will work for your business.  Regardless, of the mess the message should always be to connect, to sell and to provide quality to your customers.  Be careful how you translate the message and don’t let the mess override your message because it says a lot about your business.

DATE YOUR CUSTOMERS

CAM00031When you date someone what are some of the things that you do?  First, there must be an interest.  You see them and something comes over you. You want to know all about them. You want to know what makes them tick. You want to see if there is a connection.

Second, you want to find out how to get their attention. You see if anyone knows them in your immediate circle.  You try to find out information about them.  You try to see what they like.

Lastly, you do what it takes to make the connection.  You may call, email or connect with them via social media.  You try your best to be what they like, even if it means changing something about you.  Your goal is to make them want you and to be with you.  You want to make that bond, that connection.

Well have you considered dating your customers as well?  In order to grow your business you must do everything that one does in dating.  You see a customer that interests you; you want to get their attention and you want to make a connection.  You want to convince them that you are the real deal, the best thing out there and nothing compares to you.

Try this approach in dating your customers.  First, find out everything that you can about the customer from collateral to social media.  Second, in your research you will find out the best ways to reach out to them.   Lastly, inform them about what solutions that you can provide to them in solving their problems.

If you take the time to date your customers you will be well ahead of your competitors.  Also, make it about them and not about you.  I have used this approach and it has worked every time.  Try it for yourself and see. Reach out to me and tell me your results.

Is Stress Affecting Your Performance?

Ultimate Bliss (Vernita Naylor)
Ultimate Bliss (Vernita Naylor)

What is so different from the lives of our parents or the generation of yesteryear?  What has changed is our way of living?  If you look at the lifestyle of the 1800s, 1900s to even the year 2000 you will notice grave differences from our social life to our eating habits.  Now add technology to today’s lifestyle it is supposed to make things better for everyone but does it?

As I was listening to Dave Ross on KCBS he had a story about how some employers are tracking their employees using a bio-tracker wrist band.  Now wait, you may say why is this?  Well, believe it or not it is for monitoring their employees’ stress levels.

As a business owner my question to you is how is your stress level?  What have either your employees or customers said about you?  How is your customer service both internal (with your employees) and external (with your customers)?  A lot of times you can determine the stress level of a company upon walking within the facilities or talking with them on the phone.  The demeanor, reaction or conversation within these companies says a lot.  As Marcus Lemonis (The Profit) says if your People, Product, and Process is solid then no problem but if one of these elements are lacking then WARNING, WARNING, WARNING (Remember Lost In Space)!

I hope that you or your employees do not have to wear bio-tracker wrist bands to determine the levels of stress within your company.  Determine where your customer services lies by surveying both your internal and external customers on a quarterly basis; you will be surprised by the results.  Remember, uncontrolled high stress levels are not only bad for your health but could mean you losing customers and no longer being in business.
