Face 4Ward is designed to highlight businesses that are making positive impacts not only within their communities but throughout the world.
Every year women are overcoming several odds and making tremendous leaps and bounds. Everything they do must be about balance. Women businesses have been the backbone of this economy for decades due to their leadership-as we have seen in Shirley Chisholm and Nancy Pelosi-along with vision, drive and inspiration.
As we kick-off the first week of “Celebrating the accomplishments of women-owned businesses” Series meet Wendi Higgins, Shira Judaica, LLC who currently have four undergraduate degrees from Arts, Finance and Contracts to Politics and is currently working on her fifth degree, MSM. We celebrate her for not only being a business owner but for her sacrifices in being in the Air National Guard for 12 years which has allowed her the ability to not only pursue her education but many other interests as well.
Tell us about your business?
Shira Judaica, LLC is an e-tailer for all things Jewish. I chose to open Shira because I had tried selling insurance which was not a good fit for my personality, and when I was going through my conversion process I had a hard time finding nice Jewish items that were reasonable and all in one place. These two circumstances occurred together and Shira was officially launched on July 1st.
There are a lot of initiatives in place dedicated to helping disadvantaged and underrepresented businesses. Have Shira Judaica, LLC taken advantage of any of these programs?
As a contingency contracting officer for the Air Force there are certification programs in place that play an important role in providing opportunities for various small businesses to work with the government, however Shira Judaica, LLC does not do business with the government at this time. Shira Judaica, LLC is not currently certified primarily because the bulk of our business does not come from contracts or government where we would need to pursue a certification at this time.
What are some tips you can offer emerging business women?
1. Go with your heart and mind. I opened Shira with a vision, not a map. Having Shira and expanding our reach is a labor of love, and the slow, steady growth we have seen has been incredibly satisfying.
2. Don’t give up!
What does Shira Judaica, LLC look like within the near future?
Shira has been relatively fortunate since we opened. Our future goals are to expand what we import into a wholesale division in the next three years.
With such a successful business and being a part of the Air National Guard, do you have any time to volunteer?
Shira Judaica, LLC just sponsored a team for the Down’s Syndrome Walk In Monmouth County, NJ where I also walked with the team; Captain of two Beach Sweeps in Ocean County as an Environmental Commissioner and currently serving on the Municipal Land Use Board; active in the synagogue and in the Air National Guard.
